Autoimmune Disorder Linked to Stroke, Heart Attack in Women
(HealthDay News) -- Women under 50 with a certain form of the autoimmune condition called antiphospholipid syndrome are at greatly increased risk for heart attack and stroke, and that risk is even higher when these women smoke or take birth control pills, new research shows.
Antiphospholipid syndrome occurs when autoantibodies attach to cell membranes and interfere with the normal clotting mechanism of the blood.
In the study, researchers in the Netherlands analyzed data on more than 1,000 young women and found that those with a particular type of antiphospholipid antibody, called lupus anticoagulant, are 43 times more likely to suffer a stroke and five times more likely to have a heart attack than the general population of young women.
Women with lupus anticoagulant who smoke or take birth control pills have a much higher risk of stroke (87-fold and more than 200-fold, respectively) and heart attack (34-fold and 22-fold, respectively), the researchers found. Both smoking and birth control pills enhance the action of lupus anticoagulant, they explained.
The study authors estimated that lupus anticoagulant is present in about seven in 1,000 women, but previous studies have suggested a higher prevalence. Read more...

Acids From Alcohol and Protein Causes Cancer
Drinking more than one acid alcoholic beverage a day dramatically increases your risk of developing a cancerous bowel. Large amounts of highly acidic red meat increases this risk, according to researchers at The George Institute in Sydney, Australia, who analyzed more than 100 international studies reaching as far back as the 1960s.
"It's the first definitive study to quantify the role of lifestyle . . . on the risk of developing colorectal cancer," associate professor Rachel Huxley told AAP.
"People who eat the highest amount of red and processed meat have about 20 percent greater risk of developing the cancer than those who don't eat meat," Huxley said. The risk was similar for those who are obese, smoke, or have diabetes. Read more...

Cholesterol management and Curcumin
Cholesterol management and how Curcumin does some of its magic in the body is facinating to learn about how the extremely useful herb curcumin lowers cholesterol; it does it through up to a 7 fold increase in LDL-receptor mRNA.
The more we learn about foods effect on gene expression, the better we can begin to appreciate the many ways that appropriate nutrient and herbal remedies can be synergistic and increase the overall benefit and cost-effectiveness for the user. Curcumin does so many useful things that I consume it daily since Longevity Plus has it in Immuni-T3 to also augment immune support and in Curamin and Curcu-Gel for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory use, as well as this cholesterol benefit modulated through RNA. Ayurvedic Medicine Versus Western Medicine Discussed
What is Ayurveda good for?
The goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to prevent diseases before they occur. Studies have suggested that Ayurveda may be particularly effective at reducing the risk of heart disease. For example, a recent study found that this traditional Indian medicine helped reduce plaque and reverse the thickening of artery walls known as atherosclerosis in both healthy adults as well as adults at high risk for heart disease. (Atherosclerosis is a slow, complex disease in which fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery. This build-up, also known as plaque, can lead to heart attack and stroke.) Read more...

Is Coconut Oil Good for You?
Q: Is Coconut Oil Good for You?
I would like your input on virgin coconut oil. I have been reading that it is very good for you and has been getting a bad rap.
A: Coconut oil is one of the few saturated fats that doesn't come from animals, but like other saturated fats can raise cholesterol levels and, therefore, should play only a very limited role, if any, in your diet. In the past, it was widely used in movie popcorn, candy bars and commercial baked goods but was phased out of many of them because of consumer opposition to unhealthy tropical oils. Read more...
