Two main schools of Ayurveda are practiced outside of India.
Two main schools of Ayurveda are practiced outside of India. One, Maharishi Ayur-Veda, was started by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (of transcendental meditation fame) and emphasizes meditation as the key to healing. This for-profit (and highly profitable) group runs its own training programs worldwide and sells an exclusive line of products.
The other branch of Ayurveda — popularized by Deepak Chopra, M.D. - also advocates meditation but not as the most important means to health. It’s basically a loosely associated group of healers and health care advocates, many of them trained in India and now based at various alternative medical schools or mind-body centers. In Sanskrit, ayur means life or living, and veda means knowledge, so Ayurveda has been defined as the "knowledge of living" or the "science of longevity." Ayurvedic medicine utilizes diet, detoxification and purification techniques, herbal and mineral remedies, yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, and massage therapy as holistic healing methods. Scientific basis of Indian systems of medicine

*Are there any general criteria based on which we can call a knowledge system as being scientific and if so can traditional medicine be called scientific based on these criteria? Continue Reading >>

The concept of Prakriti
A characteristic feature of traditional medicinal systems is that they consider the individual as a whole, rather than just the disease. Treatment is fine-tuned, taking into consideration the individual's constitution, susceptibility to diseases, mental make up, lifestyle and other factors. This has been refined to a very high degree in Ayurveda with its powerful concept of prakriti.
This article aims at providing a general introduction to this concept. The word prakriti means "nature" or natural form of the build and constitution of the human body. Pra means the "beginning", "commencement" or "source of origin" and kruthi means "to perform" or "to form". Put together, prakriti means "natural form" or "original form" or "original source".
Disease occurs when there is a change in this original form at the psychological or physiological level. Ayurveda lays emphasis on examining the prakriti or the natural state of an individual first. The disease vikruthi is examined later. While the expert in modern medicine analyses the disease, the Ayurvedic expert is also interested in the individual who is suffering from the disease.
